A wind gap is a gap through mountainous terrain that a waterway once flowed through but that is now dry, the result of stream capture diverting the original watercourse elsewhere. A water gap is a similar feature in which a waterway still flows; both, because of their gently inclined profile, often provide routes for trails, roads and railroads through otherwise difficult terrain.
