The Waterberg Plateau rises in central Namibia, about 68 kilometers southeast of Otjiwarongo, protected within the 405-square-kilometer Waterberg Plateau Park, a nature reserve since 1972. Its oldest exposed rock stratum is more than 850 million years old, and the plateau's sandstone preserves dinosaur tracks left roughly 200 million years ago. The plateau stands out as a table mountain rising sharply above the surrounding plains of the Kalahari Sandveld, a prominent landmark visible from a considerable distance across the flat terrain around it. Beyond its geology, the site was declared a Namibian National Monument in 1956 and was the location of the 1904 Battle of Waterberg during the German colonial period.
