A volcanic plug, also called a volcanic neck or lava neck, forms when magma hardens within the vent of an active volcano. A plug can trap rising, volatile-charged magma beneath it, allowing gas pressure to build to extreme levels and sometimes triggering an explosive eruption; in a Plinian eruption, the plug itself is destroyed and ejected as ash.
