Vixen Tor is a granite tor on Dartmoor in Devon, England, between the towns of Tavistock and Princetown, a granite mass that appears to be made from rocks piled upon one another. It rises about 120 feet from the surrounding moor, with its summit reaching 300 meters (980 feet) above sea level, making it the highest free-standing rock on Dartmoor. Its distinctive silhouette has drawn comparisons to the Egyptian Sphinx, while locals have offered alternative readings of a vixen or an elderly man wearing a cap. Before access restrictions, 27 rock climbing routes had been documented on the tor, but since 2003 public access has been banned because of private ownership and liability concerns, a continuing point of dispute among hikers and climbers.
