Villarrica is a stratovolcano in the Araucania region of southern Chile, near the town of Pucon, reaching about 2,847 meters and standing as one of South America's most active volcanoes. Its summit crater has hosted a persistent, occasionally visible lava lake, one of only a handful known worldwide alongside Nyiragongo and Erta Ale, both documented elsewhere in this section, making Villarrica a rare site where glowing molten lava can sometimes be observed directly from the crater rim on calm nights. Built from basaltic-to-andesitic material as part of the Chilean segment of the Andean volcanic arc, the mountain carries a substantial ice cap, and, as with Nevado del Ruiz, its eruptions pose a serious lahar hazard because they can rapidly melt glacial ice; a major explosive eruption in March 2015 sent a lava fountain visibly hundreds of meters into the night sky and forced evacuations of thousands of nearby residents.
