Vestmannaeyjar is a municipality and archipelago off the south coast of Iceland, with its largest island, Heimaey, holding the main settlement of Vestmannaeyjabaer and a population of about 4,414. The islands formed through submarine volcanic eruptions over the past 10,000 to 12,000 years within the South Iceland volcanic zone, building up layers of palagonite tuff and lava. The archipelago drew international attention during the 1973 eruption of the volcano Eldfell, which destroyed part of the town before the lava flow was halted by pumping seawater onto it.
