The Velabrum is a low valley in the city of Rome that connects the Forum with the Forum Boarium and the Capitoline Hill with the western slope of the Palatine Hill, though its outer boundaries are not sharply defined. Ancient writers believed the area had once been a swamp drained by the construction of the Cloaca Maxima, a claim later disproven by core samples taken from the valley in 1994, and the low ground remained prone to flooding from the Tiber even afterward, until the surrounding ground level was raised following the fire under Nero.
