Val Poschiavo

Val Poschiavo is a glacial trough valley in the Italian speaking south of the Swiss canton of Grisons, running roughly 25 kilometers north to south through the southern Alps between the Bernina Range to the west and the Livigno Alps to the east, with Poschiavo as its main town. Elevation within the valley ranges from 2,328 meters at the Bernina Pass down to 553 meters at Campocologno on the Italian border, and the valley's sheltered position gives it a mild microclimate compared with its surroundings, supporting alpine pasture in the north and orchards farther south. The valley is served by the UNESCO World Heritage Bernina Railway, and by 2021 some 83.5 percent of its farmland was organically cultivated, the highest share of any Swiss region, with cereals, chestnuts, walnuts, berries and medicinal herbs grown across its varied microclimates.
