Turrialba Volcano

Turrialba Volcano rises in the Cordillera Central of Costa Rica, near the town of Turrialba, reaching an elevation of about 3,340 meters. It is an active stratovolcano built from andesitic and basaltic lava and pyroclastic deposits, with three craters along its summit ridge. After a long period of relative quiet, Turrialba entered a new phase of frequent ash eruptions beginning in 2010, which intensified through the following decade, at times forcing closure of Costa Rica's main international airport near San Jose and disrupting agriculture across the surrounding central valley.
