Tsingy Rouge

Tsingy Rouge is a stone formation of red laterite in the Diana Region of northern Madagascar, carved by erosion from the Irodo River. The formations lay hidden until landslides exposed them in the 1950s, and their colour comes from iron oxide rich soil that gives the whole landscape a reddish orange cast. The name tsingy comes from a Malagasy word meaning where one cannot walk barefoot, the same word used for Madagascar's sharp limestone pinnacle formations.
