The Toluca Valley is a valley in central Mexico, just west of the Valley of Mexico, formerly known as Matlatzinco. It runs north to south for about 35 kilometers, is surrounded by mountains including the Nevado de Toluca volcano, and is one of the highest valleys in Mexico with a correspondingly cold climate. Since the 1940s the valley has suffered significant environmental degradation, including deforestation, soil erosion, falling water tables and water pollution linked to industrial and population growth. In the pre-Hispanic period it formed a buffer region between the Aztec and Purepecha empires, and it is today the center of the State of Mexico.
