In structural geology, a syncline is a fold in rock layers with its youngest beds closest to the center of the structure, the inverse of an anticline. A large syncline with smaller folds superimposed on it is called a synclinorium. Synclines are typically downward folds, termed synformal synclines, though synclines that point upward can occur where rock strata have been overturned and folded.
