A swale is a shallow, gently sloping channel that occurs naturally in the landscape, slowing and spreading surface runoff along the contour of the land so that more of it soaks into the soil rather than flooding downstream. On beaches, the same term describes the long, shallow, shore-parallel troughs that lie between successive ridges or sandbars.
