Surtsey

Surtsey is an uninhabited volcanic island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off Iceland's southern coast, the country's southernmost point. It was born in an eruption that began 130 meters below sea level and broke the surface on 14 November 1963, continuing to build the island until the eruption ended on 5 June 1967, by which time Surtsey had reached its maximum area of 2.7 square kilometers, the vents that formed it part of the Vestmannaeyjar submarine volcanic system along the Mid Atlantic Ridge.
