A surge channel is a narrow inlet, usually cut into a rocky shoreline, formed by the differential erosion of the rock through coastal wave action. As waves strike the shore, water fills the channel and then drains back out as the waves retreat, and the channel narrow confines create powerful currents that reverse rapidly as the water level inside rises and falls, producing violent hydrodynamic mixing even though relatively little water is exchanged between adjacent channels.
