A summit accordance exists when hills, mountaintops, and eventually plateaux are arranged so that they form a geometric plane, whether horizontal or tilted. Summit accordances can be the remnants of former continuous erosion surfaces that were later uplifted and eroded, though other proposed explanations include erosion becoming more effective at height, isostasy regulating the height of individual mountain masses, uniformly spaced stream dissection eventually bringing summits to similar heights, and the possibility that summit accordance simply reflects structural planes exposed by erosion.
