The Sula Valley is the largest alluvial valley in Honduras, occupying the northwestern lowlands of the country and covering about 7,385 square kilometers. It is watered by the Ulúa and Chamelecón rivers and supports tropical dry forest alongside major cities including San Pedro Sula, El Progreso, Choloma, Puerto Cortés, Villanueva and Tela. The fertile alluvial soils and location of the valley make it the leading economic region of Honduras, generating roughly 65 percent of the national GDP and holding about 30 percent of the population across seventeen municipalities in four departments.
