Sugarloaf Mountain is an isolated quartzite peak in Frederick County, Maryland, rising abruptly about 240 meters above the surrounding farmland to an elevation of 391 meters, roughly ten miles south of Frederick. Its bedrock, the roughly five-hundred-million-year-old Sugarloaf Mountain Quartzite interbedded with softer slate and phyllite, is thought to represent either an outlier of nearby Catoctin Mountain or a remnant of the much older Appalachian mountain system, left standing as the softer rock around it wore away. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1969, it remains visible for miles across the surrounding Piedmont countryside.
