A strand plain, or strandplain, is a broad belt of sand along a shoreline whose surface shows well-defined, roughly parallel sand ridges separated by shallow swales. It differs from a barrier island in having no lagoon or tidal marsh separating it from the mainland and no tidal channels or inlets crossing it. Strand plains build up through wave action and longshore currents that redistribute coarse sediment on either side of a river mouth, which makes a strand plain one form of wave-dominated river delta.
