Stone Mountain is a granite dome along the Blue Ridge in Alleghany and Wilkes counties, North Carolina, the centerpiece of Stone Mountain State Park, rising to about 703 meters with roughly 180 meters of bare rock face exposed above the surrounding forest. The dome is quartz diorite to granodiorite that intruded into older Precambrian gneiss during the Devonian period and was later exposed as the softer surrounding rock eroded away, leaving its smooth exfoliating granite faces a popular destination for rock climbing. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974.
