A spit, or sandspit, is a bar or beach landform that extends out from the coast, built up by the deposition of sand and sediment through longshore drift. It typically forms where the shoreline re-enters, such as at a cove headland, when waves striking the beach at an oblique angle push sediment along the shore in a zigzag path. Longshore currents driven by the same waves add to this transport, carrying sediment further along the coast.
