South Shetland Islands

The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands in the Drake Passage, covering a total area of about 3,687 square kilometers. They lie roughly 120 kilometers north of the Antarctic Peninsula and between 430 and 900 kilometers southwest of the nearest point of the South Orkney Islands. Under the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, sovereignty over the islands is neither recognized nor disputed by the treaty's signatories.
