The Solomon Islands archipelago lies in the western South Pacific Ocean, northeast of Australia, in the Melanesian region. Its largest island, Bougainville, belongs to Papua New Guinea's autonomous Bougainville region rather than the separate sovereign state of Solomon Islands, so the archipelago spans two countries. It also includes the atolls of Ontong Java and Sikaiana, the raised coral atolls of Rennell and Bellona, and a number of volcanic islands.
