A slope-former is a bedrock unit that resists erosion less than the rock layers around it, so that instead of standing as a cliff it wears down into a gentler slope, the counterpart to a cliff-former. Shale and limestone are common slope-forming rock types in humid climates, and in the Capitol Reef area of Utah the gray Mancos Shale forms slopes beneath the more erosion resistant sandstone caprock that sits above it.
