Sierra Nevada del Cocuy is a series of highlands and glaciated peaks at the easternmost point of the Cordillera Oriental, part of the Andes in Colombia, forming the highest range of the Eastern Cordillera and holding the largest glacial mass in South America north of the Equator. Its remaining eighteen ice-covered peaks, along with glacial lakes and waterfalls, sit within a protected national park established in 1977 for the range's fragile paramo ecosystems, extraordinary biodiversity and endemism, and its role as a corridor for migratory species amid climate change. This entity documents Sierra Nevada del Cocuy specifically as a geological formation, the highest glaciated range of Colombia's Eastern Cordillera and the largest glacial mass in South America north of the Equator.
