The Siberian Craton, also known as Angaraland, is an ancient craton at the heart of Siberia that today forms the Central Siberian Plateau. It existed as an independent landmass before fusing into the supercontinent Pangaea during the late Carboniferous to Permian period, with the Verkhoyansk Sea forming a passive continental margin along its eastern edge in what is now the East Siberian Lowland. The name Angaraland was coined in the 1880s by the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess, after the Angara River, for what he mistakenly believed was one of two great Paleozoic continents of the Northern Hemisphere.
