Siachen Glacier

The Siachen Glacier is a glacier in the eastern Karakoram range of the Himalayas, within Indian-administered Ladakh. At about 76 kilometers by its longest measured length, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and the second-longest glacier in the world outside the polar regions, with a glacier system covering roughly 2,500 square kilometers. It falls from about 5,753 meters at its head near Indira Col to about 3,620 meters at its terminus. The glacier sits in an extremely harsh climate, with winter snowfall exceeding 1,000 centimeters and temperatures reaching as low as about -50 degrees Celsius, and it lies in a heavily disputed area northeast of the Line of Control between India and Pakistan, under Indian administration since 1984.
