A shoal is a natural submerged ridge, bank or bar of sand or other loose material that rises from a body of water's bed close to, or above, the surface, posing a hazard to navigation. Shoals are also called sandbanks, sandbars, gravel bars or bars, and where two or more of them share troughs or are linked by past or present sediment transport and water flow, the group is called a shoal complex.
