The Shackleton Range sits in Coats Land, Antarctica, running east to west for about 170 kilometers and up to 70 kilometers wide, with Holmes Summit its highest point at 1,875 meters and the Read Mountains, on its southeast end, reaching 1,800 to 1,950 meters; an ice-covered interior plateau between 1,200 and 1,600 meters is bordered by the Slessor Glacier to the north and the Recovery Glacier to the south. The range is built from three distinct terranes of medium- to high-grade metamorphic rock and gneissic granite, formed roughly 500 million years ago during the Pan-African Ross Orogeny, which geologists attribute to an oblique collision between the East Antarctic and Kalahari cratons.
