Satopanth Glacier

Glaciers and Ice Formations

Satopanth Glacier is a mountain glacier in the Garhwal Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, India, originating at about 7,000 meters from the peaks of Chaukhamba and Badrinath and spreading over roughly 13 kilometers before melting into water at an altitude of about 3,810 meters. It lies on the northwest side of Nilkantha peak, beneath a 2,500-meter rock face, and feeds the Alaknanda River, one of the primary headstreams of the Ganges. The glacier is retreating, though more slowly than the nearby Gangotri Glacier, and is a popular destination for trekkers, with access limited to the summer months from the Joshimath region; photography there is restricted because of its proximity to the Indo-Tibet border.
