Saskatchewan Glacier

The Saskatchewan Glacier lies in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, about 120 kilometers northwest of the town of Banff and reachable from the Icefields Parkway. It is the largest outflow glacier of the Columbia Icefield, which sits astride the Continental Divide of the Americas, and it feeds the North Saskatchewan River as it flows northeast. The glacier is roughly 13 kilometers long and covers about 30 square kilometers, and in 1960 it was measured at more than 400 meters thick eight kilometers from its terminal snout; it also displays a prominent medial moraine. It has been retreating for over a century, pulling back 1,364 meters between 1893 and 1953, including a period of especially rapid retreat averaging 55 meters a year between 1948 and 1953.
