Santa Clarita Valley lies in the upper watershed of the Santa Clara River in Los Angeles County, California, centered on the city of Santa Clarita and its Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus and Valencia neighborhoods. Its underlying geology is built from Quaternary alluvium over coarse Pleistocene conglomerates and marine and non marine sandstone, occupying the northeastern end of the Ventura Basin, a sedimentary basin long worked for oil and gas, and the now dormant San Gabriel Fault crosses the valley on a northwest southeast line.
