San Cristobal Volcano

San Cristobal Volcano rises in Chinandega Department in northwestern Nicaragua, part of the Cordillera Los Maribios volcanic chain, reaching an elevation of about 1,745 meters, the highest volcano in the country. It is an active stratovolcano built from layered basaltic and andesitic lava and ash, producing frequent minor emissions of ash and gas punctuated by occasional larger explosive episodes. Its steep, conical profile and persistent degassing plume make it one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the Cordillera Los Maribios chain.
