The Samoan Islands are a Pacific archipelago covering about 3,030 square kilometers in the central South Pacific, forming part of Polynesia within the wider region of Oceania. Administratively the archipelago is divided between the independent State of Samoa and the United States territory of American Samoa, whose land areas are separated by about 64 kilometers of open ocean at their closest points.
