Salt Lake Valley is a roughly 500 square mile valley in Salt Lake County in north central Utah, holding Salt Lake City and its surrounding suburbs. It is nearly ringed by mountains, the Wasatch Range to the east, the Oquirrh Mountains to the west and Traverse Ridge to the south, rising as much as 7,100 feet above the valley floor, with the Great Salt Lake at its northwest corner and the Jordan River running north through it from Utah Lake, a structural depression within the fault block Basin and Range topography of the Great Basin.
