Sajama rises in the Cordillera Occidental of the Bolivian Andes, near the border with Chile, reaching an elevation of about 6,542 meters, the highest peak in Bolivia. It is a dormant stratovolcano with a strikingly symmetrical, near-conical profile, built from andesitic and dacitic lava flows and capped by glaciers despite standing in an otherwise arid high-altitude desert. The mountain gives its name to the surrounding Sajama National Park, Bolivia's oldest protected area, which also holds a forest of Polylepis tarapacana trees growing on the volcano's flanks at exceptional altitude. Sajama shows no confirmed historical eruptions and is generally classified as dormant or extinct. This entity documents Sajama specifically as a geological formation, a symmetrical glaciated stratovolcano and the highest peak in Bolivia.
