Russell Glacier is an outlet glacier of the Greenland ice sheet in the Qeqqata municipality of west-central Greenland, about 25 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq. The glacier advances roughly 25 meters a year, and its meltwater feeds the Akuliarusiarsuup Kuua river system beyond an outwash plain marked by quicksand and subglacial caves. Its accessibility from Kangerlussuaq has made it a well known tourist destination, and research beneath the ice sheet there has found evidence of methane cycling, suggesting the Greenland ice sheet may be a significant source of the gas.
