Rincon de la Vieja

Rincon de la Vieja rises in Guanacaste Province in northwestern Costa Rica, reaching an elevation of about 1,916 meters at its active Santa Maria crater, also known as the Von Seebach crater. It is a complex volcano made up of at least nine eruptive centers strung along a shared volcanic massif, built from andesitic lava flows and pyroclastic deposits, and its slopes host extensive hydrothermal features including fumaroles, boiling mud pots and hot springs. The volcano and its surrounding cloud forest are protected within Rincon de la Vieja National Park, and its active crater produces periodic phreatic and minor explosive eruptions. This entity documents Rincon de la Vieja specifically as a geological formation, a multi-vent complex volcano in Costa Rica noted for its extensive hydrothermal activity.
