Ridge and swale, called dune and swale in dunal settings, is a landform of regular, parallel ridges alternating with marshy depressions. It most often forms through the gradual movement of a beach, for example as water levels fluctuate, or through the shifting meanders of a river, where the ridges commonly form as scroll bars. The pattern also occurs along ocean coasts, including the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
