A ria is a coastal inlet formed when a river valley that was never glaciated is partially submerged by rising sea level, leaving a long, branching inlet open to the sea. Because no ice carved the original valley, a ria keeps the gentler, sloped cross section of a river valley rather than the steep walls of a glacially carved fjord.
