Rathong Glacier lies in the West Sikkim district of India, extending from Rathong La in the north to the top of the Chowrikiang Valley in the south. It is fed by Mount Rathong and the ice falls of the Kabru group of peaks and is the source of the Rathong River. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute of Darjeeling maintains a permanent base camp at Chowrikiang to train climbers in ice craft, so the glacier is well known among mountaineers, even as it recedes rapidly under global warming and leaves a growing number of glacial lakes behind it.
