Portland Stone is a limestone formation of Late Jurassic, Tithonian age, quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England, where it formed as an oolitic limestone in a shallow ancient sea. It weathers well while still being workable for carving, qualities that made it a favored building material for St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
