Portage Glacier is a glacier on the Kenai Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska, within the Chugach National Forest, located south of Portage Lake and about 6 kilometers west of Whittier. The name was first recorded in 1898 by Thomas Corwin Mendenhall of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, describing its position on a portage route between Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm; centuries ago the glacier filled the entire 14-mile Portage Valley and was connected to what are now five separate glaciers. The glacier has retreated far enough that it can no longer be viewed from the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center built at the site in 1986, and is now reached by boat across Portage Lake.
