Podhale, sometimes called the Polish Highlands, is the southernmost region of Poland, lying in the foothills of the Tatra Mountains within the Carpathians in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. It is the best known Goral ethnic territory, home to extensive peat bogs and alluvial fans, and includes the towns of Nowy Targ, its historic capital, Zakopane and Czarny Dunajec. The region keeps a living regional dialect and folk culture distinct from other Polish traditions.
