A planation surface is a large scale land surface that is almost flat except for occasional residual hills, produced by a set of exogenic processes collectively called planation. Planation surfaces form regardless of the underlying bedrock structure and make up some of Earth's most common landscapes. Peneplains and pediplains are two named types, shaped respectively by peneplanation and pediplanation, and a weathered planation surface is called an etchplain.
