Pine Island Glacier is a large ice stream and the fastest melting glacier in Antarctica, responsible for about 13 percent of the continent's ice loss. It flows west northwest along the south side of the Hudson Mountains into Pine Island Bay, part of the Amundsen Sea, and the area it drains makes up about 10 percent of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Satellite measurements show the Pine Island Glacier basin contributes more ice to the sea than any other ice drainage basin in the world, a contribution that has grown as the glacier's flow has accelerated and its grounding line has retreated in recent years.
