Pidurangala Rock is a granite inselberg in central Sri Lanka's Matale District, about one kilometer north of the larger Sigiriya rock formation. Like Sigiriya, it is described as a hardened granite outcrop deriving from the solidified magma plug of a former volcano, rising abruptly from the lowland plains that extend from the island's central mountain range. Its slopes hold the former Buddhist monastery of Pidurangala Vihara, a registered archaeological protected site, including a cave temple said to date to the fifth century reign of King Kashyapa, a monumental reclining Buddha statue and the remains of two stupas.
