A pediment, sometimes called a concave slope or waning slope, is a very gently sloping bedrock surface, typically inclined between half a degree and seven degrees, that curves down and away from the base of a retreating desert cliff, escarpment, or a monadnock or inselberg it surrounds. A pediment can persist as a landform long after the higher terrain that originally bordered it has itself eroded away.
