An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake or pool that forms when a wide meander of a river is cut off from the main channel, leaving behind a free-standing body of water. The word oxbow can also describe the U-shaped river bend itself, whether or not it has been cut off, and takes its name from the U-shaped harness piece used to yoke an ox to a plough or cart.
