The Oaxaca Valley, also known as the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, is a geographic region within the Sierra Madre Mountains in the modern state of Oaxaca in southeastern Mexico, shaped like a distorted, nearly upside-down Y with the Etla arm to the northwest, the Valle Grande in the center and south, and the Tlacolula arm to the east. The valley was home to the Zapotec civilization, one of the earliest complex societies in Mesoamerica, and later to the Mixtec culture, and it holds important archaeological sites including Monte Alban, Mitla, San Jose Mogote and Yagul. The state capital, the city of Oaxaca, lies in the valley's central portion.
